Summary o f the 2011 OCEA Symposium at ESA Annual Meeting in Reno, NV
The 2011 Overseas Chinese Entomologists Association (OCEA) symposium was held on November 15, 2011 during the Entomological Society of America Annual Meeting in Reno, NV. Over 50 participants attended the symposium. The symposium was organized and moderated by Dr. Jian Chen, 2011 OCEA President, from the National Biological Control Laboratory of USDA/ARS, Stoneville, MS, Dr. Shiyou Li, OCEA Vice President, from Canadian Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada, Ottawa, ON, Canada, and Dr. Haobo Jiang, OCEA Treasurer/Secretary, from the Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK.
The election of 2012 OCEA officers was conducted before the symposium started. Dr. Shiyou Li will serve as the 2012 President of OCEA and Dr. Haobo Jiang the Vice President. Dr. Nannan Liu from Auburn University, Auburn, AL was elected as the 2012 Treasurer/Secretary of the OCEA.
The symposium was featured by three invited speakers. Dr. Chunsen Ma from the Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, China, introduced his research on the effect of global warming on the major pest insects in northern China. Dr. Lihua Lu from the Plant Protection Research Institute, Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Science, Guangzhou, China, talked about the status of invasive pest insects in Guangdong Province, China. Dr. Lieceng Zhu from the Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville, NC, introduced the Fayetteville State University to the audience, including challenges and opportunities for the department, university, students and faculties. She also talked about the opportunities for research collaboration between major universities and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Dr. Shiyou Li presented the 2011 OCEA Highlights, which featured the accomplishments of the OCEA and its members in 2011. In collaboration with the State Key Laboratory of Integrated Management of Pest Insects and Rodents, Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOZ, CAS), OCEA successfully organized an advanced summer training course in entomology during July 11 - 15, 2011 in Beijing (also known as insect summer school). Over 90 graduate students attended the training. Nine invited speakers were from the United States (Drs. Fangnen Huang, Jianyong Li, Kunyan Zhu, Qisheng Shong, Que Lan, Xiaoqiang Yu, Xiao-Wen Cheng, Xingping Hu, and Zhijian Tu) and 4 from IOZ, CAS (Drs. Chenzhu Wang, Dexing Zhang, Jianghua Sun and Le Kang). Accomplishments of the OCEA members include organizing major symposia, receiving major research grants and various awards, receiving advanced degrees, being promoted, and being appointed to serve on editorial boards of scientific journals.
As a tradition, OCEA organized a Graduate Student Research Competition for students of Chinese origin. The first place winner of the 2011 competition is Mr. Xue Zhong from the Division of Cell Biology and Biophysics, School of Biological Sciences, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas City, MO. He is a Ph.D. student supervised by Dr. Xiaoqiang Yu. The runner up is Mrs. Ting Li who is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, Auburn University, AL. Her supervisor is Dr. Nannan Liu. The third place winner is Mrs. Yao Xu who is a MS student under the supervision of Dr. David Held in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in Auburn University. Dr. Jian Chen presented Certificates of the Award to three winners. He also acknowledged students and judges for their participation in this event.
Dr. Haobo Jiang presented the 2011 financial report. Donations were collected before the symposium was ended.

OCEA 2011 Graduate Research Awards
The Overseas Chinese Entomologists Association (OCEA) would like to invite all Chinese-origin graduate students to submit their applications for the 2011 OCEA Graduate Research Awards which will be presented to the winners during the OCEA symposium of the 2011 ESA Annual Meeting in Reno, NV.
To be eligible, all applicants must submit either a poster or an oral presentation to the ESA meeting. In addition, applicants also need to submit the following information to Dr. Jian Chen by email (jian.chen@ars.usda.gov) before October 31, 2011. Please note: all applicants have to follow the following format to avoid disappointment of un-eligible):
1. Title of your presentation
2. A PDF of your poster.
If it is an oral presentation, please create a PDF document based on your presentation. It should include introduction and background with literature cited, objectives, materials and methods, results and discussion, and significance to the field of research (not exceed 3 pages, 8.5 X 11 in page size, single line space, 12 font size)

3rd International Insect Science Symposium

As a tradition, the State Key Laboratory of Integrated Management of Pest Insects and Rodents, Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Science and Overseas Chinese Entomologists Association (OCEA) are organizing the 3rd International Insect Science Symposium on July 11-17, 2011 in Beijing, China (aka Insect Summer School). This symposium has been proved to be an excellent opportunity for the overseas Chinese entomologists to interact with their peers in China and meet the students – the future of the entomology. You are cordially invited to participate in this exciting event. Each speaker can deliver multiple talks. Each talk will last one hour including 10 min for questions. The 2010 OCEA Symposium Held during the ESA Annual Meeting in San Diego, Califorina, USA
The 2010 Overseas Chinese Entomologists Association (OCEA) symposium was held during the Entomological Society of America annual meeting in San Diego, December 14, 2010 . The symposium named “Opportunities and Challenges of Globalization in Entomology” brought about 70 participants from Canada, China, United States, and other countries. The symposium was organized and moderated by Dr. Kun Yan Zhu, the 2010 President of the OCEA, from Kansas State University and Dr. Jian Chen, the 2010 Vice President of the OCEA, from National Biological Control Laboratory of USDA/ARS. Zhu welcomed all the participants and expressed his appreciations to those traveled all the way from China.
The symposium was featured by six invited presentations. Dr. Kongming Wu from the Institute of Plant Protection , the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences highlighted the infrastructure, research programs, and research teams of his institute. He welcomed the overseas Chinese entomologists to visit the institute, to collaborate with the scientists and to work at the institute. Dr. Enbo Ma from Shanxi University introduced their major joint international research project in insecticide resistance of the oriental migratory locust and highlighted their achievements of the project. Dr. Jianzhen Zhang, also from Shanxi University, introduced recent research innovations in insect molecular sciences in China. Dr. Tong-Xian Liu from Northwest A&F University
highlighted the infrastructure, research programs, and research teams of the entomology program at his university. He also welcomed the overseas Chinese entomologists to visit his university, to collaborate with the scientists and to work at his university. Dr. Wenqing Zhang from Sun Yat-Sen University presented several examples of using RNA interference technologies to disrupt insect chitin synthesis in insects. Finally, Dr. Zeng-Rong Zhu from Zhejiang University presented his research in odor and pheromone-binding proteins in rice lepidopteran insects, and briefly introduced the Institute of Insect Sciences at Zhejiang University. These presentations not only reflected the current research status and advances in insect sciences in China but also signified the great opportunities of scientific exchanges and research collaborations among the entomologists in China and around the world. All the presentations were well received.
After the feature presentations, Chen highlighted the achievements and accomplishments of the OCEA members in 2010. The highlights represented very impressive accomplishments of the OCEA members including organizing major symposia, receiving major research grants and various awards, receiving advanced degrees, being promoted, and being appointed to serve on editorial boards of scientific journals. Kun Yan Zhu announced the three winners of the OCEA student paper competition. They are Yunlong Yang (Louisiana State University), Picheng Zhao (Oklahoma State University) and Donglan Tian (Pennsylvania State University. Finally, Zeng-Rong Zhu presented a “Faith of Truth” Chinese calligraphy wall scroll to the OCEA, and Kun Yan Zhu accepted his gift on behalf of the OCEA. The symposium was ended by business meeting including the financial report by Dr. Shiyou Li from Natural Resources Canada and the 2011 election of the OCEA. The 2011 OCEA officers include Dr. Jian Chen, the President; Dr. Shiyou Li, the Vice President; and Dr. Haobo Jiang, the ecretary/Treasurer, from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Le Kang, the President of Beijing Institutes of Life Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Xiao-Fan Zhao from Shandong University, and many other well-known scientists from China, were among the audience of the symposium.
2011年7月10日至15日,"第三届昆虫科学新理论与新方法暑期高级培训班"在中国科学院动物研究所成功举办。会议主办方为中国科学院北京生命科学研究院、中科院动物所农业虫害鼠害综合治理研究国家重点实验室与海外华人昆虫学者联合会(OCEA),培训对象主要是国内年轻的科技人员和研究生。
前两届论坛分别在2006年和2009年暑期举行,是大规模地邀请海外杰出华人昆虫学者、国际著名昆虫学家和国内优秀昆虫学家参加的大型论坛,受到了国内昆虫研究学者的热烈欢迎。培训班邀请到九位海外华人学者以及中国科学院动物研究所4位研究员,他们带来了25场精彩的报告。专家们对昆虫杀虫剂抗性、昆虫天然免疫、 昆虫信息素、昆虫行为、植物-昆虫相互关系、化学生态学研究、功能基因组学、转基因作物的生态风险等主题进行详细介绍。
这次培训对提升我国昆虫学研究的研究水平,培养国内昆虫研究人才、促进昆虫研究的国内外合作具有非常重要的意义。众多参会者均表示,希望这种形式的高级培训班能持续开展下去。海外学者们通过这次会议不仅展示了他们的最新科研成果,而且对国内昆虫学研究的水平有了一个比较全面的了解。他们认为国内许多昆虫学家的研究工作走向了国际,有些研究已处于国际的前沿。这次培训班还为国内外昆虫学科研工作者,尤其是给研究生提供一个学习沟通的桥梁,构建一个与国内外著名昆虫学家面对面接触的平台。
内容摘要: 9月2日,中组部就启动第二批“青年千人计划”申报工作下发通知,第二批“青年千人计划”申报主体为国内高校、科研机构(含转制科研院所)、已批准为创新基地的中央企业。 9月2日,中组部就启动第二批“青年千人计划”申报工作下发通知,第二批“青年千人计划”申报主体为国内高校、科研机构(含转制科研院所)、已批准为创新基地的中央企业。
根据通知,第二批“青年千人计划”申请人须申报人须2011年7月1日之后全职回国(来华)工作,并具备如下五个条件:(一)属自然或工程技术领域,年龄不超过40周岁(1971年10月15日后出生);(二)在海外知名高校取得博士学位,并有3年以上海外科研工作经历。在国内取得博士学位的,应在海外从事教学或研究工作5年以上;(三)回国(来华)前在海外知名高校、科研机构或知名企业研发机构有正式教学或科研职位;(四)引进后全职回国(来华)工作;(五)是所从事科研领域同龄人中的拔尖人才,有成为该领域学术或技术带头人的发展潜力。以上计算年龄和工作年限的截止日期为2011年10月15日。
除以上提到的引进对象外,第二批“青年千人计划”破格引进在读期间已取得突出研究成果的博士应届毕业生,或其他有突出成绩的人才。
“青年千人计划”申报材料在报送时,部门所属高校报教育部汇总;中科院、部门所属科研机构(转制院所)报科技部汇总;中央企业报国务院国资委汇总;省(区、市)所属高校、科研机构报专项办汇总。“青年千人计划”申报材料请登陆“千人计划”网站下载并按要求填报。
中央财政将对引进的青年人才给予一次性每人50万元的补助,此外,还将根据“青年千人计划”评审标准给予引进人才100万-300万元的科研补助经费,科研经费一次核定,按进度拨款。

The 3rd International Symposium on Insect Physiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IPBMB) will be held from July 2nd - 6th, 2011 in Shanghai, China
As a major forum for the exchange of multidisciplinary research in insect science, IPBMB will attract 200-250 scientists, including faculty, post-doctoral scientists and graduate students. Some most active scientists in the field will be invited to give plenary speeches. The symposium is structured in four major components: one, plenary sessions with keynote speeches and special reports; two, thematic symposia; three, pre-congress workshops; and four, vendor exhibitions. Papers selected from the symposium will be considered for publication in Archives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology and Insect Science.

With a history of more than 900 years, Zhouzhuang is an ancient city, about 25 miles west of Shanghai
There are many water townships in China and Zhouzhuang, called the Venice of the East”, is the most famous. Zhouzhuang is noted for its profound cultural background, well preserved ancient residential houses (for examples, Shen House, Zhang House, Milou Tower), and elegant watery views from ancient bridges (Fu’an Bridge and the Twin Bridges to name a couple of them).

Abstracts
Abstracts (one page research summaries) should contain only new and unpublished material and must be submittedelectronically by the abstract deadline, May 31st, 2011. Presenting authors may submit abstracts for consideration as talks and/or posters. The format of the abstract refers to Archives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology, within 1000 words.
